5 Tips for Hosting a Lunar New Year Gathering

Occurring every 12 years, the Year of the Tiger represents independence, fearlessness, loyalty, and high self-esteem. As one of China’s most important holidays, Lunar New Year is a time for luck, food, and family.

While Tuesday, February 1st marks the start of Lunar New Year, celebrations last around 23 days. We put together a short guide inspired by our 2022 Lunar New Year collection to help you host an elegant gathering to honor the Year of the Tiger.

Clean Your Home

Do everything you can to make sure your home is spick and span before midnight on Lunar New Yea’s Eve, January 31st. Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust your home to ensure your home is rid of any bad luck. Don’t forget about the trash! Be sure to take out your trash before midnight as cleaning of any kind on the first day of Lunar New Year is forbidden—even dishes!

Create Your Menu

To ensure a stress-free celebration, decide which dishes you will serve and prepare the ones you can ahead of time. The most common Chinese New Year foods include Chinese dumplings, steamed fish, spring rolls, longevity noodles, steamed chicken, and vegetarian stir fry. Foods that are traditionally eaten during this time double as symbols meant to bring good fortune. Supposedly, the more dumplings you eat during Spring Festival, the more money you can make in the new year! Treat your guests to our Lunar New Year-themed candies, including Lotus Flowers, Peach Tea Bears, Tangerine Bears, and more!

Decorate to Invite Good Fortune

Make your gathering as festive as possible by decorating your tablescape! When gathering your supplies, keep in mind the color red has long symbolized good luck in Chinese culture. Basics include a red tablecloth, decorative plates, and chopsticks at each seat. When hosting, it is always nice to leave a little sweet for each person in attendance. Our Lunar New Year 2 Piece Candy Bento Box and Lunar New Year 8 Piece Candy Bento Box feature exclusive Lunar New Year sweets. Both would be a great conversation starter, treat, and ultimate accessory to any table setting. Finishing touches to your gathering can include decorative serving bowls or trays, red lanterns, and decorative napkins.

Prepare Your Red Envelopes in Advance

Wish your guests a safe and practical year with Lunar New Year Red Envelopes! A gift given during Lunar New Year, it is tradition to put crisp, new bills inside a red envelope. Avoid putting coins in the envelopes as well as giving amounts with the number ‘4’ as “Four” in Chinese is an approximate homophone with the word death. Place each guest's red envelope by their place setting or hand them out during your celebration. Remind your guests to receive their red envelopes with both hands (if you hand them out) and to open their envelopes in private or once they get home.

Make Some Noise

Lunar New Year is a happy and lively celebration in which noisy activities are encouraged as it is believed that noise scares away evil spirits. If you are attending festivals, fireworks and firecrackers create a festive atmosphere, express happiness, and invite good luck into the new year. For an at-home celebration, popping small balloons is another way of warding off bad luck.

As you gather with your loved ones and say cheers to health and a good year ahead, Sugarfina is delighted to partake in your celebration with extra sweetness. Make sure and purchase your Sugarfina Lunar New Year sweets and tag @sugarfina on Instagram for a chance to be reposted!
